Out of the drawer: the old MIDI, Suno, and the films
What is mine and what is Suno's, the hallucinations, the AI tag, and why the videos are cut to films.
People ask what in these songs is mine and what is the machine's. The melodic part is what I value the most, to be honest. I don't think of myself as a composer. I'm just an amateur. But I appreciate good music, and I like creating my own music. So for me, by far the most important part is the musical material.
When I put it into Suno, I was just blown away. I couldn't even dream about hearing my songs done so professionally. I didn't like that Suno sometimes hallucinates something into the music, so it can go really nicely up to the middle and then some very nice juicy part that I always liked, and it just does it absolutely wrong. But still, it's beyond my expectations in any case.
There is not much I can do about those hallucinations. I can only say that they are very minor, maybe 5% or less. So I can put up with them for now. The way I do it is basically I export my MIDI into a sound file, and then I feed it into Suno. Sometimes I need to raise the volume of some parts of some instrument, or lower it down, so that Suno doesn't hallucinate too much on it. I think over time it will be better and better. So I will try to regenerate my songs from time to time to see if it improves.
Suno does basically the playing. It's the production, the putting it all together. Actually, the drums are something I don't really care that much about. I know that good drums are super valuable, but I never really spent much time on the drums. Sometimes Suno overdoes the drums, especially the opening parts. But overall, it doesn't really contradict my vision of the music and the musical material.
Regarding people thinking of it as music done by AI: unfortunately, most of the platforms now have this AI tag, created by AI. They don't really have the separation of, let's say, composed by human, and AI is the production part. So I have to put up with this for now. But for me, most importantly is getting this music to the people, because I really don't want it to be sitting in the drawer my whole life.
About the videos. To be honest, I didn't care that much about the video part, but I just realised that on YouTube, if there's a black screen, then nobody will listen to this song. So there should be something. I tried to generate it using AI, and there are two songs with AI-generated video. I paid, I think, around 120 Australian dollars for both of them, and I don't really see this money in this video. So it still leaves a lot to be desired. And then I decided just to try to take some movie, a movie that would reflect the mood of the song, in my view. And yeah, I think there are some very nice matches. And of course, the audience will judge in the end.
